Quick Summary

Keith Raniere founded NXIVM (pronounced “nexium”), a purported self-improvement organization based in Albany, New York, that operated from 1998 until its dissolution in 2018. Beneath its veneer of executive coaching and personal development courses, NXIVM harbored a secret subgroup called DOS (Dominus Obsequious Sororium, roughly “Master Over Slave Women”); a coercive master-slave hierarchy in which women were branded with Raniere’s initials, forced to provide nude photographs as “collateral,” placed on extreme caloric restriction, and subjected to sexual exploitation.

Raniere was convicted on June 19, 2019, of all seven charges: racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, attempted sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy, forced labor conspiracy, and wire fraud conspiracy. He was sentenced on October 27, 2020, to 120 years in federal prison; effectively a life sentence.

The Details

NXIVM: The Self-Improvement Front

NXIVM marketed itself as a cutting-edge personal and professional development organization. Its core offering, Executive Success Programs (ESP), consisted of multi-day intensives costing $5,000 or more. Members were organized into a rigid hierarchy using colored sashes to denote rank; a system deliberately modeled on martial arts belts.

Raniere positioned himself as “Vanguard,” a once-in-a-lifetime genius. Members were taught that Raniere possessed an IQ of 240, had been a judo champion, a concert-level pianist, and a record-breaking distance runner. These claims were largely fabricated. The organization used thought-reform techniques including sleep deprivation, caloric restriction, isolation from non-NXIVM friends and family, and mandatory confession of personal secrets.

DOS: The Secret Society

DOS operated as a secret, all-female group within NXIVM. Recruitment was conducted under strict secrecy; recruits were told they were joining an exclusive women’s empowerment group. Before being told what DOS involved, they were required to provide “collateral”: nude photographs, damaging personal confessions, or legally binding documents that could be used to destroy their lives if they revealed the group’s existence or disobeyed orders.

Once inducted, “slaves” were assigned to “masters” who answered to Raniere (the sole “grandmaster”). Slaves were required to:

  • Be branded on their pelvic area with a cauterizing pen in a ceremony performed without anesthesia. The brand was presented as a symbol of the “four elements” but was later shown to contain Raniere’s initials (KAR).
  • Follow extreme caloric restrictions (as low as 500–800 calories per day) to maintain the body type Raniere preferred.
  • Be available for sexual encounters with Raniere at any time, day or night, with a two-minute response expectation.
  • Perform “acts of care” (unpaid labor) including property maintenance, transcription, and other tasks.
  • Recruit additional women into DOS.

The Trial

The six-week trial in the Eastern District of New York featured testimony from 19 witnesses, including former DOS slaves, NXIVM members, and forensic analysts. Key evidence included text messages in which Raniere discussed acquiring a teenage “successor” and explicit photographs of an underage girl found on Raniere’s personal camera.

The jury convicted Raniere on all counts in fewer than five hours of deliberation. At sentencing, Judge Garaufis stated that Raniere had shown “no remorse for his crimes” and that his “monstrous acts” warranted the maximum sentence.
